Shoe upper materials are of the hightst priority as they effect the fit, comfort and performance of the shoe. There are four essential requirements for a proper material for shoe uppers. They are conformability, breathability, dimensional stability and suppleness. Large Size Shoes for Women will explain these terms below. On the following page we will discuss the materials themselves.
Breathability
The idea of breathability is often associated with "pores" in the material to allow it to breath. This is not correct, a material can be porous and not breathable. Breathable is the ability of the material to absorb and pass off foot moisture. Good shoe breathability is important to keep the foot dry, hygenic and comfortable.
Dimensional Stability
This is the ability of the material to retain its origional shape. Naturally this is important to fit, comfort and esthetics of the shoe. When a shoe is lasted in the factory, much of the stretch in the material is removed. (Please See The Shoe Last) However enough stretch remains to allow the shoe to conform to the foot.
Suppleness
For proper fit and comfort the upper material should be reasonably supple, pliant and resilient. Upper materials vary in this quality. Supple materials provide the best conformability and comfort.
Conformability
This is the ability to adapt and conform to the constantly changing variables in size, shape, and proportions of the foot. The shoe upper material must have a certain degree of elastic quality to adapt to these changes.
